Summary

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is in the process of revising the CIBSE Code for Interior Lighting, which is the primary UK guidance document for lighting design. The new edition of the Code is scheduled for publication in the autumn of 1993. The section on energy efficiency is significantly revised compared with the previous edition and contains recommendations for the average circuit efficacy of lamps within an installation, together with target ranges for installed power density per 100 lux, W/m_2/100lx. These are intended to limit the installed load without compromising good lighting. Separate installed power density targets are given for different building types, room sized and lamp types. There are also recommendations on appropriate lighting control systems, which allow the operator to avoid excessive hours of use.
