The Use of Distributed Intelligent Control in Energy Efficiency Lighting Systems

Berndt Schalin
OY Helvar, Finland

Summary

The use of lighting control to reduce energy consumption in lighting systems is becoming more popular than before. Total reported energy savings range up to 60-70% compared to traditional installations. The new systems have not always been well received with the end users, because of lack of local control possibilities, and the some problems arising from complex installation and commissioning requirements have also been observed. The development of low cost microcircuits, including significant "intelligence" or information processing power, is now offering possibilities to improve system performance without significant cost penalties. The paper reports on R&D work done in this direction.
