Abstract

The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEI-J) organized the Special Technical Committee of Effective Energy Utilization in Lighting in 1991 and made several surveys for almost two years. The aim of this committee was to have a better understanding of the present status of lighting technology in Japan especially from the view point of energy efficiency and then to seek and hopefully identify the direction of lighting research and technology, toward which we should take a step in the future.

Twenty six members of IEI-J, whose expertise ranges from research to consulting, participated in the committee. This paper describes the results of the work done by this special committee (1). The following are some of the results.
  1. Statistics of annual electric power consumptions for lighting in Japan were gathered and then compared to those in foreign countries. It was found that the electric power demand for the purpose of lighting itself in Japan has remained unchanged for the last several years, although the total electric power demand has kept increasing in recent years.

  2. State-of-the-art technologies in energy efficient lamps, ballasts, light fixtures and others were investigated.

  3. Various lighting design methods, presently in use for lighting in office buildings, dwellings and others were compiled. It was mentioned that a special care should be taken in road lighting for safety and in lighting for aged people for their well-being, though energy efficiency itself is also important in these kinds of lighting.
