Abstract

The spectral transmittance of new glazings and increased numbers of panes used in some windows affects the amount of light admitted into dwellings. Properties of daylight and buildings that could be, and are in practice, used to govern daylighting are itemized. Standards and codes used to regulate residential daylighting in several northern countries are reviewed. A proposal for stipulating window area based on traditional approaches, but accounting for new transmittance characteristics, is presented.
