Abstracts

In the last years (1996) was designed a unique lighting system "Heliobus" and have installed it in the four-storey building of Boppartshof school in St.Gallen (Switzerland). The new system "Heliobus" comprises a novel stationary heliostate located on the roof, and a vertical prismatic light guide permeating all floors and illuminating recreation halls in the centre of the building. The light guide is of square section and utilises novel three-dimensional extractors providing the proper light ejection. Special metal-halide lamps (swithced on individually or (simultaneously) provide light for the light guide at nights, on gloomy days or in twilight. "Heliobus" has secured lighting comfort in the recreation halls in any daylight conditions, the overall wattage of installed lights has been halved and the consumption of electricity has been decreased 3-5 times due to a lesser use of artificial lighting. "Heliobus" lighting system introduces a new approach to interior lighting design, where appearance of lighting device dynamically changes. Realisation of such systems demands coordination of efforts of lighting engineers, architects and builders.
