Abstract
The building designer and specifier has an almost limitless choice of visual and performance possibilities if there is a knowledge about the possibilities. In the search for comfort and maximal energy efficiency in commercial and residential buildings there is a possibility to select the exact glass type or combination to suit any situation. In the presentation the following possibilities will be show:

U-values
The U-value conventionally are used to calculate heat loss, but ignores the fact that some materials, such as glass also allow solar heat energy to enter a building. ?Effective U-value? will be described.

Descriptive code
The performance figures of a double-glazing unit depend on the properties of two glasses, the spacer width and the filling of the enclosed space.
Before it was nearly only a matter of define a U-value, to take care of heat-loss. Today the description of a glass unit with different glasses should also give the performance data for solar lighttransmittance and solar radiant heat: Total Transmittance.

Light transmittance
Normally light transmittance is for transparent glass, but to-day several different techniques can be used for getting translucent light.

High performance.
The ultimate to date in environmental glass, is that it has both solar control and low-emissivity properties. This glass offers high light and low heat transmissions, and is also capable of the highest levels of thermal insulation according to need and how it is used.
Ex. Roof glazing for shopping centres need a high performance glazing system: to get solar light in, to avoid excessive solar heat gain, but also to minimise heat loss in winter and can now get: a comfortable environment with the minimum of heat energy consumption.
Keywords: Environmental control glass, Daylight: transparent and translucent, Screen-printet, laminated with coloured foils, Low emissivity, Solar control, energy savings, descriptive code.
