Abstract
It is people who are ultimately responsible for choosing and using the lighting in their home, a fact which often gets overlooked in calculating potential energy savings in the domestic lighting sector. People?s lighting requirements, the types of luminaires in the house, the locations selected for energy saving light bulbs (CFLs) and the problem of take back (where improved efficiency is taken in the form of increased level of service) all have an impact on the level of savings which are actually possible. The existing luminaires ?and changes to them ?have a particular impact on cost-effectiveness calculations and consumer acceptance.
This paper presents the preliminary results of a survey investigating the role of luminaires in determining the realistic potential for installing CFLs in residential households. The survey was carried out in the UK, Germany and Sweden as part of the DELight (Domestic Efficient Lighting) project.
