IAEEL newsletter 2/92
EPRI focus on lighting The lighting program of the US utility-supported Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is growing at a fast pace. The aim of the EPRI Lighting Program is to assist in the development of new technologies and encourage member utilities to adopt them. The portfolio of technology transfer materials includes computer software, applications materials and packaged educational courses. LightCAD 1.0 - a lighting design tool - is already available, and LightPAD 1.0 - a field analysis tool for laptop computers - will be available in early 1993. Recent products include three fact sheets on state-of-the-art lighting technologies, Advanced Lighting Technologies Applications Guidelines - summarizing performance data - and the Commercial Lighting Efficiency Resource Book - a comprehensive reference guide. A number of additional fact sheets and brochures as well as handbooks - including a Lighting Fundamentals Handbook and a Retrofit Lighting Handbook - are also planned. EPRI's lighting work also includes technology development. An integrated light fixture with advanced lamp, luminaire, and control technologies built-in, is being developed for both retrofit and new applications. EPRI also plans to support the development of new light sources with little or no mercury which can be 25-50% more efficient than those currently available. The EPRI Lighting Information Office was recently established. The Office provides toll-free phone support to EPRI member utilities regarding lighting technologies, applications, and research developments. The Office publishes lighting bulletins - summarizing technical issues such as lighting maintenance and lamp switching - as well as a quarterly newsletter covering utility, governmental, industrial, and EPRI lighting programs. To improve information access, an "EPRINet" special interest forum was established for member utilities on EPRI's on-line computer network, including a lighting news service, a bulletin board, and a bibliography of lighting publications.
