Handmade quality CFLs are now being assembled by hand in various countries. In some cases importing components results in lower import duties than importing finished products. The quality of the resulting lamps is rising steadily: e.g., 40% failure initially in Sri Lanka, now 10%. Large lighting companies are very attracted by this way of establishing production in a new country or region: no large capital outlay is required, and production levels can be adjusted rapidly and over a large range. Hand assembly is also being done in Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. |
