Moscow: a word from the street

There are a whopping 220 000 street lamps in Moscow. An accurate measurement has not been made, but these lamps use about 720 million kWh each year, equal to the electricity produced by a 150-megawatt baseload power plant. .

The city energy management department wants to retrofit to more efficient types of lamps, fixtures, and photocell on/off controls but lacks the capital. One proposal is to convert the nearby military lamp factory to produce energy-efficient high-intensity lamps. The city hopes to find Western investors for the project.
