Lighting-HVAC Interactions

It is sometimes argued that buildings at far-northern latitudes have little to gain from efficient lighting. But this does not apply to all buildings in all all locations; even in a cold country like Sweden there are net gains to be made. And in a country like Thailand, the potential for lighting-related HVAC savings is great.
Hard-to-Catch Sunlight
Sunlight is an abundant and free resource-if it can be utilized efficiently. In a daylight-dimming controls study, researchers from Florida found that applying photosensors to dimmable ballasts was far from easy. Potential savings were eventually reached, but this demanded hard labor.

Light Pipes and Reflectors
If the new high-power electrodeless light sources are to compete successfully on the market, a systems approach to lighting will be required. A few recent demonstration projects show possible applications for the future. On page 8, we take a look at light-pipe basics.
