IEA launches daylighting research program

After a successful workshop held in Copenhagen last March, the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Solar Heating and Cooling Executive Committee decided to establish a new research program on daylight in buildings. More than 15 countries have committed themselves to participate in the program, which is named "Task 21" and chaired by Denmark.

The main topics of this 5-year research program are:

  • daylighting systems

  • electric lighting control strategies (for instance, integration with other systems)

  • daylighting design tools (software)

  • Case studies, including demonstration projects.

The actual research will be conducted by R&D institutes and the industry, and will begin around the middle of next year, following an initial one-year planning phase.
