EYE ON DSM TECHNOLOGY "The Demand-Side Technology Report" is a monthly newsletter on DSM technology issued by the US-based information service Cutter Corporation.

LIGHTING FOR DEVELOPMENT Nearly one third of humanity lives in darkness after sunset, mainly because they lack access to electricity.

EFFICIENT BUILDING DIRECTORYThe "European Directory for Energy-Efficient Building" provides comprehensive details of energy-efficient building components, services, and materials available throughout Europe.

EYE ON DSM TECHNOLOGY · The Demand-Side Technology Report is a monthly newsletter on DSM technology issued by the US-based information service Cutter Corporation. The newsletter reports on a wide range of energy-efficient technologies, and covers both residential and non-residential applications.

The newsletter also covers technologies that help measure, monitor, and evaluate energy use. In recent issues, lighting has been given good coverage; the January issue of the newsletter devoted several pages to buildings integrating daylight and artificial lighting.

Although the emphasis of the newsletter is clearly North American, it should be of interest to readers elsewhere who want to keep posted on developments in DSM technology.

An annual subscription costs US$587 ($527 for North America) and may be ordered from:

LIGHTING FOR DEVELOPMENT · Nearly one third of humanity lives in darkness after sunset, mainly because they lack access to electricity. Traditional forms of lighting, such as kerosene pressure lamps and butane lamps, tend to be inefficient and provide inadequate light for many applications.

Recent developments in lighting technology have led to promising possibilities for providing cheaper and better lighting in rural areas. Energy-efficient lighting can reduce the system costs for small solar photovoltaic or wind-powered electricity systems, enabling electric lighting in villages and homes off the electricity grid.Rural Lighting: A Guide For Development Workers (Louineau, Dicko, Fraenkel, Barlow & Bokalders) provides information and basic advice to assist development workers and project managers working with rural or semi-urban development, health care and farming, as well as in small business sectors, to choose the right systems. The book features topic areas such as:

  • What level of light is necessary to meet basic needs?

  • Which types of light sources are most suitable?

  • How can the power for lighting be generated?

  • How can cost-effective lighting systems be implemented? Matters addressed here include assessing the system requirements; sizing and specifying; working out the economics; procurement and installation; and maintenance and operation.

The book also includes an extensively illustrated worldwide buyers' guide section providing information on lighting systems and products. Although emphasizing electric lighting, this book also discusses fuel-based lighting systems.

The book is the fourth in a series of guides published in cooperation with IT Power in the UK, the Stockholm Environment Institute, and the Swedish Mission Council, both in Sweden.

EFFICIENT BUILDING DIRECTORY · The European Directory for Energy-Efficient Building provides comprehensive details of energy-efficient building components, services, and materials available throughout Europe.

The directory lists more than 3000 companies. It features articles and case studies from institutes and companies active in this field. The book is edited by John Owen Lewis and John Goulding of the Energy Research Group at University College in Dublin, Ireland, with the assistance of an editorial board from across Europe.

Subjects covered include integrated design, solar architecture, photovoltaics, energy conservation and insulation, energy-efficient building services, monitoring and control, and geographical articles.
