POWER QUALITY AND CFLs · Two reports on power quality and lighting make an attempt at sorting out the subject. The first report, "Compact Fluorescent Lamps and Voltage Distortion " was published in 1992 by the Dutch electricity and power research organization KEMA for the Dutch Energy Utilities' Association (Energiened) and Novem, the Dutch Agency for Energy and the Environment. The report concludes that the installation of power-factor compensating devices in integral CFLs is unnecessary - and even inadvisable - when CFLs are used in residential applications, assuming that CFLs of high quality are used.
The report also concludes that for commercial applications when many CFLs are installed in networks with an heavy CFL load, such as in a office building, power factor-compensation is desirable.
ANOTHER PUBLICATION that addresses power quality and lighting is the recent issue of "Lighting Answers" which is published within the (US) National Lighting Product Information Program at the Lighting Research Center (LRC). |
