Back to main article: Halogen Uplights And Hot Ceilings

What's in a name?

The halogen torchiere is known by a variety of names around the world. The word "torchiere" (sometimes spelled "torchier") comes from the French word meaning torch-bearer.

They are generically described as halogen floor lamps or halogen uplighters, a term broad enough to include other fixture types as well. New Zealanders refer to them as freestanding uplighters. The basic style of a tall, bowl-shaped uplight has been in existence for decades - long before its marriage with a halogen bulb - finding widespread use in funeral homes as a source of soft, indirect light.
