EU COMPACT LIGHTING INFO · The Thermie OPET Network has put together a number of publications on energy-efficient lighting.

Several "guides" have been produced (most of which have been presented in the IAEEL Newsletter). A "Summary Guide", Energy Efficient Lighting Practice, sums up a number of important points made in the three Thermie "Maxibrochures" on efficient lighting: Energy Efficient Lighting in Buildings; in Industrial Buildings; and in Offices.

The Thermie brochures on lighting have also been followed up by a number of two-page "Technology Summary Leaflets" summing up important points regarding energy-efficient lighting in various areas. The summary leaflets have the following titles: Energy Efficient Lighting for the Home; in Hotels; in Shops; in Industry; and in Offices, respectively. The leaflets are produced by the Irish Energy Centre.

Guides and leaflets can be ordered for free on a first-come-first-serve basis.

SOLAR LIGHTING · Even in a northern country like Norway, the effective use of solar energy can drastically reduce the amounts of heating, cooling and lighting energy consumed in buildings.

This claim is made by solar experts who present their research results from 45 building case studies in 12 countries in Passive Solar Commercial and Institutional Buildings, published under the auspices of the International Energy Agency.

This sourcebook of examples and design insights encourages the design of buildings that are adapted to and profit from the climate. The book is also claimed to give ample evidence of the importance of daylighting for commercial buildings that are occupied primarily during the day. In the part covering daylighting, examples of classical and new daylighting strategies are described; daylighting, air conditioning, and energy costs are discussed, and experiences in using daylighting design and calculation tools are evaluated.

BUILDING WITH PVs ·Photovoltaics in Buildings has the subtitle "A design handbook for Architects and Engineers". This handbook deals not only with building energy conservation but also with energy production in buildings.

The target groups are building designers and architects without specialized knowledge in the field. It covers areas such as components, integration methods, system design, installation and maintenance, the relation between PVs and other elements of the building energy system, how to maximize the overall solar contribution to the building, and how to optimize economics.

The Handbook is the outcome of the five-year program "Photovoltaics in Buildings", within the Solar Heating and Cooling Program of the International Energy Agency.

Eds. Friedrich Sick and Thomas Erge at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. 288 pp. + 8 pp. color section. Hardcover A4. ISBN 1-873936-59-1. £50 or US$75.
