Large-Scale Procurement Of Occupancy Sensors

Occupancy sensors are being used in many buildings throughout the world. In the US, participants in the EPA's Green Lights Program installed 156,500 occupancy sensors between September 1992 and June 1996, and appr. 50,000 sensors have been installed in Switzerland.

In Sweden, Nutek is coordinating some of Sweden's major commercial building owners in a technology procurement process involving 20,000 occupancy sensors.

The buyer group has specified an (not-yet existing!) occupancy sensor for use in one-person office units. In the specifications, a short time limit is defined within which a normal wall-switch can be replaced with the sensor. It must also be able to detect fine finger motions such as those of someone typing. The buyer group is interested in buying 20,000 sensors over two years if a manufacturer can meet the specs at a price not higher than SEK 250 (~US$40). Technical proposals are currently being evaluated for testing. First deliveries are expected in early 1998.
