First moves by Philips-HP joint venture for LEDs LumiLeds Lighting B.V. a Netherlands-based joint venture between Philips Lighting and Hewlett-Packard, is, for the first time, addressing the market by exhibiting their red, amber, and green "High Flux" LED-based traffic signals at Intertraffic Œ98 in Amsterdam. According to LumiLeds, their "High Flux" LEDs provide a ten-fold higher light output than the ordinary 5-mm LEDs, yet in a much smaller source size. They also claim that their product has as the same long life, low power consumption, and sturdiness as other LEDs. LumiLeds has developed a light engine, around which a signal module has been built, with housing and optics. The company plans to have started the large-scale production of red signal modules by July 1998 but has not stated when the green and amber modules will be in serial production. LumiLeds Lighting is supplying full LED signal modules to OEM´s only. LED light-engine modules, intended for the retrofit market, will be marketed through LumiLeds parent HP to the signals module industry.
