SLI bought by much smaller CML

The Massachusetts-based (US) Chicago Miniature Lamp Company, CML, recently acquired Sylvania Lighting International, SLI. Before the take-over, SLI was the worldıs fifth largest lighting manufacturer, but it was not present in North America. Through the deal, CML has now positioned itself as the worldıs fifth largest lighting manufacturer, with a presence on all continents.

SLI was a privately held company, with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and was the world's fifth largest full-line lighting company, manufacturing and marketing six lamp, luminaire, and specialized lighting brands on all the continents except North America.

Until 1993, SLI was present in North America, as Sylvania Lighting, owned by GTE. That year, the North American part of Sylvania was sold to Osram, thus forming Osram-Sylvania. The rest of the world operations were sold to SLI.

As a result of the CML-SLI deal, the worldıs fifth lighting manufacurer is once again active in North America, and thus truly global.
