Publications received GERMAN LIGHTING GUIDES · The German Fördergemeinschaft Gutes Licht ("Association for the Promotion of Good Light") has, over the last years, published an impressive series of easy-to-understand lighting design guidelines and information booklets. Behind the association are a large number of individual lighting companies active on the German market, ranging from electronics and light source manufacturers to luminaire manufacturers. The booklets are 36-52 pages each, printed in 4-colors, and dedicated to various themes. Wherever applicable, guidelines are based on German DIN standards and VDE recommendations. To-date, 15 areas have been covered, of which about 10 have been translated into English. The first guide starts with the fundamentals of artificial lighting, followed by design guidelines for various types of end-use. The guides do not generalize too much: For instance, the area of commercial lighting is not covered in a broad publication, but individual booklets are devoted to hospital and health care lighting, office lighting, and lighting in lobbies, reception rooms, meeting rooms and other rooms where appearance is important. It should be noted that the booklets do not focus mainly on efficiency in lighting, but the economics of lighting is given due attention. (However, following developments in electronics, a special booklet has been devoted to energy efficiency and electronics in lighting, and it was recently translated into English.) The following areas are covered (available in both English and German unless noted otherwise):
