IAEEL newsletter 2/98
Editor's Corner This issue has a special focus on developing countries. The articles reflect two major themes: First, we take a look at the Efficient Lighting Initiative, the aim of which is to influence lighting markets in a way that encourages the application of efficient technologies in a number of developing countries. Efficient lighting can help reduce peak loads, cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve the finances of poor households. However, the second developing-country theme deals with those who do not even have electricity and for whom the prospects of electrification are very dim indeed. Almost two billion people still lack access to electricity. In relation to their low incomes, these people spend a fortune on fuel-based lighting. Guest author Robert van der Plas makes a compelling case for why lighting manufacturers have a unparalleled opportunity to exploit this market by providing simple and reliable PV-lanterns. There seems to be a huge uncaptured market consisting of people who want to improve the quality of lighting used for productive tasks, such as studying or handicrafts, while, at the same time, reducing their lighting service costs. Finally, we present the results of a technology procurement competition aimed at bringing an improved, reliable and low-cost occupancy sensor on the market. I am always amazed at how wisely formulated functional specification can work wonders! Have a Happy Last Year of the Millenium!
