Effects on Lamp Life A typical four-foot fluorescent lamp has an average lamp life of 20 000 hours. This life is estimated based on the assumption that the lamp will operate for at least 3 hours at a time and that the lamp is operated on a rapid-start ballast. If lamps are operated for less than 3 hours per start, the lamp operating life will be shortened. Occupancy sensors are likely to increase the frequency of lamp switching and shorten lamp life. However, the useful life of the lamp (i. e., when someone is utilizing its light) is extended because the lamp is operated for shorter periods. Instant-start ballasts will reduce lamp life more quickly than rapid start ballasts. Dorene Maniccia |
