The Indian Energy Management Centre

India is a growing economy. The opening up of the economy in the nineties will see a spurt in economic activity. The rapid increases in urbanisation, changes in lifestyle, increase in production facilities, all call for substantial levels of energy being consumed by the economy.
Various reports have indicated thet there exists substantial scope for improving energy efficiency in energy production, transmission, distribution and end-use. These reports have also indicated that energy consumption could be reduced by 10-15% at half or three fourths of the cost of adding new energy production facilities. This would result in enormous savings for the economy and also save money for the customers as well.

The need for an executive agency for implementing and monitoring of energy conservation programmes in the country and provide policy guidance and advise on energy efficiency was felt. Keeping this in view, Government of India decided to set up Energy Management Centre (EMC) in April, 1989, as an autonomous organization under Ministry of Power.

Main activities of Energy Management Centre

The main activities of EMC are grouped under the following:
  • promote energy audits in enterprises and provide recommendations to improve energy efficiency and fuel substitution;
  • organise sector specific promotional campaigns and provide technical assistance in the field of energy efficiency;
  • identify barriers to improve energy efficiency and propose appropriate incentives and other measures to overcome them;
  • suggest introduction of standards and labels and setting of consumption targets;
  • organise training for energy managers and equipment operators;
  • implement multilateral and bilateral aided energy efficicency projects;
  • monitor progress made in energy conservation and fuel substitution and initiate follow-up actions where needed:
  • develop a National Energy Database by collecting and analysing data on energy supply, demand and information on prices;
  • review laws and regulations that have an impact on energy consumption and propose modifications and formulate suitable policies and actions, and
  • provide planning assistance to government agencies. Energy Management Centre
