Halogen uplights, or torchieres, have rapidly become one of the most popular residential luminaires in the world. Not only has their energy use erased all of the savings achieved by compact fluorescent lamps in many countries, but their high operating temperatures have also caused dozens of fires in the US alone.

A Burning Energy Issue
A halogen torchiere in the US can retail at below $20. Their high power and hot lamp surfaces are now becoming a major concern for energy as well as public safety authorities.
Green Lights Program Is Paying Dividends
The US Environmental Protection Agency's Green Lights Program now has more than 2 300 participants. With almost 100 million m^2 of floor space upgraded to efficient lighting and 500 million more square meters in the pipe line, Green Lights participants had saved ~$250 million in energy costs by 1996. By the beginning of the next century, the Green Lights Program estimates it will have saved more than $1 billion in lighting
energy costs.
