IAEEL newsletter 1/97
Editor's Corner
This issue of the Newsletter is thinner than normal and only contains a few articles. The reason is that we needed to make space for the attached invitation to Right Light 4 in Copenhagen, Nov. 19-21, 1997. Don't miss this event! It will be hard to ever find an audience more focused on energy and lighting gathered under the same roof!
In this issue we present overviews on two broad subjects. First, Julian Aizenberg and Evan Mills provide an overview of a very complex subject; the usefulness of hollow light guides. From their article, it is clear that hollow light guides remain an interesting, but important, niche technology for distributing light.
The accompanying article illustrates why it is so difficult to compare the efficiencies of hollow light guide installations. On the other hand, we still need to make such comparisons despite the difficulties, since they provide a basis for decisions on investments, research funds, etc.
The second theme relates to fluorescent lighting in commercial buildings. Here, the relatively new T5 technology is swiftly penetrating the market, promising large future energy savings. But it is the combination of T5 technology and other technological advances that will lead to substantial energy savings. Highly reflective aluminum represents one such advance. However, the use of such aluminum is not limited to fluorescent lighting. In fact, it will have an impact throughout the lighting industry.
