Summary

The issue of automatic controls for artificial lighting in office buildings is highly underrated. Systems sometimes are installed without having figures on the (economic) feasibility and even without having the guarantee that they will operate at all without causing distress for the office worker. This paper points out existing gaps in knowledge/technology when it comes to developing or evaluating controls for artificial lighting. An assessment tool is proposed to predict (for each new project) the performance of the control in terms of energy savings. The need for integrated analysis and design tools to put these savings in a wider perspective is highlighted.
