Community Actions to Promote Energy Efficient Lighting

R.H. Greenwood
Commission of the European Communities
Directorate General for Energy, Belgium

Summary

As part of its activities to promote the more efficient use of energy, the Commission is currently investigating ways in which it further promotes more efficient lighting, in particular in the commercial sector. In this sector lighting accounts for about one third of electricity consumption and substantial savings can be achieved.

A study is being carried out for the Commission on the possibilities for different measures such as minimum efficiency standards to lighting, energy labelling, promotional programmes and other initiatives.

In each case the economics, feasibility and effectiveness of the measure is being investigated. Following conclusions of the study, consideration will be given to make concrete proposals such as on standards or labelling.
