Summary

Facility Management is a profession that experienced tremendous growth in the last decade. The reason for this is, that the criteria to evaluate buildings has changed. Location, appearance, construction and lighting costs may still be important factors, but the costs of exploitation during the lifetime of a building and the ability to contribute to the objectives of the organisation it accommodates through increased productivity and efficiency is more and more emphasised.

A building is looked at as the framework of the production tool accommodation, that should provide this productive and economical environment by optimal functioning of the four basic elements:
  • construction, such as walls, windows, layout, etc.;
  • systems, such as the distribution of heat, electricity, lighting, etc.;
  • services, such as communication-facilities, catering, cleaning, etc.;
  • management, such as energy, maintenance, security, etc.
and, very important, the coherence between these elements.
