Trond HansenEnvironmental Aspects of Light Sources Eilif Hugo Hansen The Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim, Norway Abstract Gas discharge lamps contain substances which may contribute to the pollution of the environment. In spite of this fact, only very few countries have implemented regulations for the handling of replaced lamps. This paper presents the contents of discharge lamps, and some of the effects on the environment caused by the chemical contents of discharge lamps, in particular mercury. Since production, use and destruction of lamps all will have some negative influences on the environment, the conclusions of a life cycle analysis of fluorescent lamps vs. incandescent lamps is presented. The existing methods and public means in Norway for handling and destroying the lamps is presented.
