Quality Lighting - The Need to Cry over Spilled Milk D.A. Schreuder Dr., Duco Schreuder Consultancies, Spechtlaan 315 2261 BH Leidschendam, The Netherlands Abstract The function of lighting is to enhance visibility (utility lighting) and/or enhance aesthetics (decorative lighting). The (economic) effectiveness of the lighting is the degree to which the function is fulfilled, the (economic) efficiency the degree to which the benefits surpass the costs. Spilled light contributes to the costs of the lighting. Quality lighting aims at fulfilling the requirements better with smaller costs. One may use energy-efficient lamps or use optically well-designed luminaires, or a good lighting design that brings a maximum of light at the desired location.
