Abstract

PV Lighting can be a cost effective alternative to traditional flame-based lighting sources, and can pave the way for the widespread introduction of PV into rural areas. The concept of pre-electrification is explored with respect to PV lighting and comparisons are made between the conventionally recommended illuminances for various tasks and the minimum illuminances that are appropriate. Nevertheless, the introduction of even the minimum electrical lighting provides a huge improvement in quality of light over flame-based sources. The pre-electrification illuminances are in most cases several times smaller than is conventionally recommended, resulting in smaller systems and lower energy costs. To design an adequate and effective PV lighting system, lighting needs must be carefully assessed in terms of level of illuminance, colour rendering, duration of use, etc. A simple methodology is presented for such a design process and the characteristics of lamps suitable for use with PV are reviewed.
