Abstract

Most of electric lighting, in India, occurs when electric utilities have their systems peaks, which is during the evening hours from 6-9 p.m. This is also the time when the utilities impose cuts on the industrial and commercial consumers on non-lighting consumption, in order to provide domestic and other consumers with electricity for lighting. Demand for electric lighting is expected to grow at 10% per annum at least for the next decade or so, while incandescent lamps will continue to dominate the lighting scene considering their low cost, ease of use and easy availability.

Estimates of savings possible by the use of energy efficient lighting range from 200-1000 MW at the consumers' end for various scenarios. While energy efficient light sources are available, there are some problems in their usage which need to be looked into. Also lack of information is seen as one of the major barriers in increased adoption of energy efficient lighting systems. The entry of utilities in this important area would be a major step in realizing the benefits of energy efficient lighting.
