Into the Socket or Into the Closet? Site Survey Findings for a Lighting Catalog Program
Sabrina L. KarlPaul I. Berkowitz Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation, 3120 International Lane, Madison, Wisconsin, 53704, USA Edward G. Mailloux UNITIL Service Corporation, 216 Epping Road, Exeter, New Hampshire, 03833, USA Abstract When utility lighting programs rely on the installation of bulbs by customers, rather than by trained field personnel, much uncertainty exists regarding how many of the bulbs are actually installed, how the installed bulbs are used, and how likely the customers is to use the uninstalled bulbs in the future. To mitigate this uncertainty, a utility in New Hampshire, USA, performed site surveys of a sample of the participants in its residential lighting catalog program, which sells mail order compact fluorescent bulbs and fixtures. This paper presents highlights of the site survey findings, such as installation rates, wattages, replaced, and reasons for non-installation, the key results of an impact analysis based on the findings, and a comparison of the data with results of other lighting program evaluations. In addition, key conclusions drawn about the program and recommendations for its future directions are also presented.
