ABSTRACT
The work describes the evaluation and modifications of the lighting system of a highway. The evaluation was performed by photometric measurements of LAverage, horizontal illuminance Eh, laboratory tests and calculations. The installation was a double row arrangement above central reservation. At each post four semicuttoff luminaires were mounted on both sides equipped with 400W high pressure sodium lamps. The arm length was 0.3 meters. The highway was designed with four lanes on each driving direction. At the moment of the evaluation two lanes on each side were ready. The luminance profile of the measurement performed on each lane and the side area of the highways shows a strong differences between the luminances, although the average luminance of the road fits the recommendations. The highway is built through a foggy and rainy area. The lateral geometry mounting of the luminaires was not the best solution for such climate, to provide a higher uniformity along the highway surface. In order to solve both problems: unequal cross luminance distribution and low uniformity two modifications were suggested: (1) To mount the luminaires on a 3 meters length arm, and (2) To reduce to one luminaires equipped with 600w high pressure sodium on each side.
