ABSTRACT
On entering a room from a bright atrium space or a gloomy corridor, building occupants can experience adaptation effects which influence their manual switching decisions. This paper attempts to quantify the impact of adaptation on switching behaviour on entering daylit spaces. Where switching depends on light levels at the back of the room the effects of adaptation may be significant. Where switching is related to unacceptable contrasts on the window wall adaptation is unlikely to have much impact. The predictions agree well with experimental results from a recent Japanese study.
