INTRODUCTION
Continual improvements and cost reductions of photovoltaic systems have made solar energy a viable option for public lighting, which, in many situations, entails lower investments and running costs than conventional lighting. In recent years, photovoltaic-powered public lighting (PV-PL for short) has kicked into high gear in the Netherlands and beyond. If the design is good, a highly reliable PV public lighting system can be constructed. An important precondition is that energy conservation should receive adequate attention.
