SUMMARY

Good conference, good complement

Forty-three percent of the respondents to the survey distributed after the conference gave the event the highest possible rank on a scale from 1 to 5 (with five as the highest), and another 38 percent gave the conference a rank of 4. In line with previous Right Light conferences, an overwhelming majority of respondents considered Right Light 4 to be a good complement to other conferences on lighting and energy. Right Light also manages to attract new attendees: 57 out of 71 had not visited Right Light Three.

Attendees´ affiliation

Attendees from research establishments and educational facilities were most common (21 of 71). However, this also reflects that Right Light 4 for the first time had a special session on lighting education. Many people wanted to see more participation from lighting manufacturers, but compared to previous Right Light conferences, the attendance of this group actually was rather high. (13 of 71). If lighting design consultants, manufacturers, energy management consultants and architects are grouped together (the groups with a direct commercial interest in lighting) this group appears by far as the biggest group among respondents with a total of 50 out of 71. Among the respondents, government and energy agency representatives at various levels totaled 15 people. (It should be noted, however, that several persons checked multiple affiliations.)

Conference focus

The mix of subjects at the conference seemed to be appreciated. Although Right Light 4 had a strong focus on daylighting and residential lighting, only 8 and 6 (out of 71) respondents thought that these subjects had been given too much attention. Only one or two respondents, respectively, believed that any of the other topics at the conference had received too much attention.

Quality of sessions

Sessions were generally well appreciated. There was very little difference in the views on technology-oriented and implementation-oriented sessions.

Despite the ambition of Right Light 4 to boost the quality of the poster session compared to previous conferences, poster presentations and poster papers were nevertheless received, on average, somewhat lower ranks than the orally presented papers (and their corresponding presentations). However, the responses shows an improvement compared to Right Light Three, so the conference seems to be on the right track. Some comments worth noting for future organizers is that poster appeared to be somewhat "hidden away".

Conference fees

Most people seem to think that the conference registration fee was worthwhile paying for. Only 3 of the respondents ranked the fee versus usefulness of the conference as a one or two. 18 ranked the fee as a three and 33 gave it a four. 11 respondents ranked it a five. Considering the overwhelming majority of respondents thought the conference was very good, this is a clear indication that a lower fee would be appreciated.

Respondents were also asked to indicate how many dollars they would be willing to pay for a conference. (Actual registration fee for RL4 was between US$600 and 700 ). 10 people thought that $700 was OK to pay for the event, 15 judged $600 to be the maximum fee and the majority, 28 respondents, thought $500 to be the right fee. Only 6 people thought $400 to be a fair registration fee. The conclusion is that $500-600 seems to be a good fee for such an event. If this is possible to achieve for future conferences remains to be seen.
