LIGHTING THE HOME · The Lighting Pattern Book For Homes by Russell P. Leslie and Kathryn M. Conway is not a book for lighting professionals. Rather, the book is an attempt to reach all those who work with residential energy conservation, and anyone who cannot afford to hire a professional lighting designer. The book emphasizes ways to combine good lighting quality and energy efficiency.

After a short introduction on "People and Light" the book offers different ways of approaching residential lighting problems.

First, in "Using a Lighting Technique" different lighting techniques are described. In the following "Design" chapter, different model situations (kitchens, bathrooms, entrances, etc.) are described and solutions suggested. The economics of each model solution are carefully calculated.

After the design chapter, simple-to-use spreadsheets help the reader to do lighting calculations. The final section of the book gives a thorough description of different technologies-lamps, luminaires, and controls. The book concludes with a glossary.

Since the book is written for the American home and technologies, many solutions will not be directly applicable in other countries. Still, it may serve as a source of inspiration.

The book costs ~$50 (ISBN: 1-993297-00-1) and can be ordered from the Lighting Research Center in US. Address under the "LRC Reports" below.

NEW LRC REPORTS ·Occupancy Sensors, Parking Lot Luminaires, and Compact Fluorescent Lamps are three recent titles in the US National Lighting Product Information Program's Specifier Reports series. (See also IAEEL Newsletter 1/92).

To complement the Specifier Reports series, the Product Information Program earlier this year introduced a new six-page serial publication called Lighting Answers, in which one lighting topic per issue will be addressed in a question-and-answer format. Unlike the Specifier Reports, the information presented in Lighting Answers is not based on a thorough and time-consuming testing of products. According to the Lighting Research Center, Lighting Answers will be able to address questions in a more timely manner. Two issues have been published so far; the first on efficient T8 fluorescent lamps, and the second on so-called Polarizer Panels.

ECEEE PROCEEDINGS · Proceedings of the 1993 ECEEE (European Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy) Summer Study are now available. The proceedings,The Energy Efficiency Challenge for Europe, contain papers addressing five broad topics: energy policy, programs and program evaluation; commercial technologies and buildings; human dimensions of energy-use and conservation; the energy-environment link; and transport.

The proceedings contain several papers dealing with lighting, directly or indirectly. Some examples: Overcoming barriers to residential energy-efficient lighting, Procurement and demonstration of lighting technologies for the efficient use of electricity, Alternative strategies for artificial lighting using electronic ballasts, Mexico's residential sector: main electric end-uses and savings potential, and Potential for governmental policies to improve US lighting energy efficiency in commercial and residential buildings.
