According to Marshall Hayner, an early adopter of Bitcoin (BTC), Adam Back had a beer with Satoshi Nakamoto in London.
„Yes, I met him once.“
Metal Pay CEO Marshall Hayner told Cointelegraph a story he heard from Back at a party at Los Gatos a few years ago. The party was held to celebrate the formation of Blockstream and its successful capital raising.
Satoshi Nakamoto had outside help in cryptography, according to the developer of Bitcoin
Hayner said he was invited to the party by Austin Hill, who was the CEO of Blockstream at the time. The community was small and tight-knit, with only a few people selected. Apparently, after a few drinks, the theme of Satoshi Nakamoto came up. This supposedly caused Back, who has often been seen as a popular candidate for Satoshi, to say: „Yes, I met him once“. When pressed for more details, it was reported that Back refused to give further details, stating
„I don’t want to say too much. But he is a British guy and I met him in London, went to the pub and had a beer. I think he might be MI6.“
Hayner does not remember Back specifying when this meeting took place, but he assumes it would have been sometime between 2009-2010. It is interesting to note that rumors have infiltrated for years regarding Bitcoin originating from one or more intelligence agencies.

Back and Maxwell deny it
Hayner recalled that several people closely associated with Back and Blockstream were also present. Among them were the aforementioned Austin Hill and Gregory Maxwell, a developer of Bitcoin Core. Cointelegraph contacted Back, Hill and Maxwell to recall those events.
Back denied unequivocally that he had met Satoshi Nakamoto, and claims that he never told this story:
„No, I wouldn’t have said that since it’s not true; as far as I know, no one (who is not making up stories) has claimed to have met Satoshi in person.“ – He added, „Also, I don’t know who Marshall Hayner is and I didn’t interact with him on this issue.

Maxwell’s response echoed Back’s. He confirmed his presence at the party, but denied having heard this story:
„I don’t remember Adam saying anything like that, and I would remember if I had heard it: it would have been inconsistent with everything I’ve heard Adam say on the subject before or since, and also inconsistent with my understanding of the Bitcoin story (I think, as far as we know, no one in the Iq Option community has ever met Satoshi).“
Maxwell also added that he consulted with his partner, who was also present at the party. They also did not remember this conversation.
Hill did not respond to Cointelegraph’s inquiry.
